As the news is hyping the "great powerball jackpot" and visions of piles of cash crowd people's heads remember what the Bible says about earthly wealth and treasures: "Do not weary yourself to gain wealth. Cease from your consideration of it. When you set your eyes on it, it is gone. For wealth certainly makes itself wings. Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens." Recently, I was at the Post Office and saw a terrible scene. A person was backing out of a parking space and a lady came whipping through the lot and came to a stop behind the woman backing out. Since the woman just wasn't moving fast enough for this lady, the lady honked her horn made many hand jestures and then raced around the woman who was backing out endangering people. She was headed to drop a letter in the box! When you're tempted to act like this pray for patience! The book of James gives us something to remember in times like these: "You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. The next time you go to say something nasty or dash off an angry email, consider what the book of James says about the mouth (or in today's case the "electronic mouth", the keyboard): "With it we bless our Lord and Father; and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; From the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. As Christians, we can't just go to church and say we believe in God. The book of James tells us: "Even so faith, if it has no works, it is dead, being by itself." (JAMES 2:17 NASV). Too many people in todays' world are trying to be the "big shot" or to have everything everyone else has...and not just material things either. Here are two translations of the same verse that are a good guide on how to live. "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time." (1 Peter 5:6 NASV) "Be content with who you are, and don't put on airs. God's strong hand is on you; He'll promote you at the right time." THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
So many people in todays' world think that once they have forgiven someone ONCE that their obligation is over. Not so! When Peter asked how many times he should forgive someone Jesus laid it out: "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven." THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
When you do good or give something to someone (the word for this in the Bible is "alms"), don't brag about it! Let that stay between you and God. Jesus addresses this in the Sermon on the Mount: "When therefore you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honored by man. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing." (Matthew 6: 2 - 3) Taken from the Holy Bible March 3, 2006

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
While the Ten Commandments address Murder (Though shall not kill), Jesus addressed just being angry or unhappy with others in the Sermon on the Mount. "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever shall say to his brother, 'Raca'(possibly meaning: fool, emptyheaded or stupid) shall be guilty before the supreme court, and whoever shall say 'You fool' shall be guilty enough to go into the hell of fire." If you're angry with someone, check out what Jesus had to say in the Sermon on the Mount: "If therefore you are presenting your offering at the alter, and then reemember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the alter, and go your way; first be reconciled to your brother and then come and present your offering." A little more on forgiveness from the Sermon on the Mount..."For if you forgive men for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Think about where your treasures and rewards are! The next time you go to make a judgement call about someone...whether it be as simple as their clothes all the way up to the way they live, remember what Jesus said about judging others in the Sermon on the Mount: "Do not judge lest you be judged yourselves. On this day of rememberence of Jesus dying on the cross for us (Good Friday) I thought this verse was very appropriate even though I've posted it before. As I think of Jesus laying in the tomb today, this verse from Isaiah reminds me what He did for us and how thankful we should be. The verse says: All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.
